This agreement strengthens Silk Way West Airlines’ presence in the Japanese market whilst helping Nippon Express Holdings to expand its business globally by providing cargo capacity across a worldwide network.

Silk Way West Airlines has been serving the Japanese air cargo market since 2018 via weekly flights connecting Baku with Kansai International Airport. As part of a wildlife reintroduction project, Silk Way West Airlines flew 100 yaks over more than 2,000 kilometres from Kyrgyzstan to Azerbaijan. The cargo experts transported the herd from Bishkek Manas International Airport to Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport. Moving these animals was a challenge that the freight airline successfully completed in accordance with the request of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Thanks to the airline’s crew and loadmasters’ long experience with animals’ transportation, the yaks all were delivered safely to their destination, and were subsequently transported to their new pastures by truck from the airport.

Silk Way West Airlines has successfully handled numerous live animal shipments in the past in accordance with all IATA regulations. The carrier’s extensive experience includes transportation of alpacas, kangaroos, dogs, horses, and European bison.

Silk Way West Airlines aircraft provide their animal passengers with a perfectly air-conditioned and ventilated environment thanks to ventilation and temperature control systems. The yaks were transported in special cages designed to ensure that they were not exposed to any risk of injury during the flight and remained under veterinary supervision throughout their journey to ensure their wellbeing.

“We are proud to be involved in projects like this, contributing to the preservation of a sustainable and biodiverse environment worldwide. Thanks to experienced crew and accompanying veterinarians, we were able to transport safely the yaks to their new home in Azerbaijan. We thank the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan for their trust in our work,” said Vugar Mammadov, Vice-President CIS and Central Asia of Silk Way West Airlines.

Silk Way West Airlines has signed an order with GE Aerospace for a total of 16 GE9X and GE90 engines to power its new fleet of long-haul Boeing aircraft. The new engines, the world’s most powerful models, will contribute to the Azerbaijani cargo airline’s sustainability goals by reducing its fuel consumption.

Silk Way West Airlines recently announced the purchase of two Boeing 777-8F, which will be powered by GE9X engines, and will receive additional GE90 engines for five Boeing 777F ordered in April 2021. The order comprises five GE9X and eleven GE90 engines in total and further contributes to the modernization of the carrier’s cargo fleet.

The GE9X is the most powerful aircraft engine in history and the quietest model ever produced by GE. It will deliver a fuel consumption improvement of up to ten percent compared to the GE90-115B, and like all GE commercial engines, both the GE9X and GE90 are compatible with any approved sustainable aviation fuel. The new engines will therefore not only enhance Silk Way West Airlines’ operational performance but also contribute to its strategy of increased cargo transport sustainability.

During the signing ceremony, Zaur Akhundov, President of Silk Way Group, highlighted the importance of the relationship with GE Aerospace, saying: “We are pleased to continue our longstanding successful cooperation with GE Aerospace. The signing of this agreement marks the strengthening of our relationship. Thanks to this, Silk Way West Airlines will move confidently into a sustainable future with a more efficient fleet that meets the highest emissions and noise standards. We believe this partnership expansion will help us meet our long-term strategy of sustainable growth as well as our environmental commitments, and will continue to improve services for our valued customers.”

“The GE9X engine offers a combination of performance and fuel efficiency that is unmatched in its class,” said Kathy Mackenzie, President and CEO, Commercial Engine Operations at GE Aerospace. “We are proud to expand our relationship with Silk Way West as they continue to modernize their fleet for cargo operations.”

Everett, Washington / Baku, Azerbaijan, 10 November 2022 – Silk Way West Airlines shows no sign of slowing down its impressive record of growth, having secured a deal to offer even more cargo capacity in the future. The Azerbaijani cargo carrier signed an order with Boeing for two state-of-the-art 777-8 Freighters with options for two additional aircraft, the two companies announced today at the agreement signing ceremony in Everett, Washington. Per the agreement, aircraft deliveries are planned for 2029 and 2030.

Silk Way West Airlines is the first customer in the whole Central Asia region to order the industry’s newest, most capable and fuel-efficient twin-engine freighter. The aircraft can carry over 118 tonnes of structural payload with a range of over 9,200 km. With its advanced technology, new GE9X engines and composite wing design, the 777-8 offers 30 per cent greater fuel efficiency and emission levels as well as 25 per cent lower operating costs per tonne. As a result, the new aircraft will also make an important contribution to the airline’s sustainability goals.

This investment will not only enable Silk Way West Airlines, which serves 40 destinations around the world, to further expand its international network and meet growing demand for cargo transport, but will also strengthen Baku as a key international cargo hub. The Azerbaijani capital has become increasingly important for the Middle Corridor linking Europe and the Western Hemisphere to Asia through the Caspian region.

Back in April 2021, the cargo airline signed a purchase agreement for five Boeing 777s, setting the course for further fleet growth. Now, the new 777-8 aircraft complement SWWA’s fleet development plans by enabling the necessary operational commonality, enhancing a long-term strategy of sustainable growth as well as allowing the Azerbaijani carrier to continuously improve service to its customers.

“We are pleased to announce this order with our longstanding partner Boeing and become one of the world’s first customers for the newest freighter,” said Zaur Akhundov, Silk Way Group president. “This year Silk Way West Airlines celebrates its 10th anniversary, and over the past decade we have been operating an all-Boeing fleet. Today’s agreement reflects our ongoing investment in Boeing’s market-leading freighters. Our fleet renewal plans will help to further reduce our operating costs and enhance fuel efficiency as well as make air freight services in our region more sustainable.”

“With sustained demand for air cargo tied to expanding e-commerce and air freight’s speed and reliability, Boeing expects the global freighter fleet to increase by 60% through 2041,” said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We are proud that Boeing products, including this order for the 777-8 Freighter, continue to drive Silk Way West Airlines’ expansion plans and help realize the ambition of making Baku a global cargo hub.”

There’s been a lot of talk lately about the global shipping and supply chain industry. For good reason – according to the World Economic Forum, the air cargo industry is responsible for transporting goods worth $12 trillion annually and it’s only getting bigger. But with this growth comes some big challenges. For one, there’s a growing demand for faster and more reliable shipping services.

This increase in demand has put a strain on the industry’s infrastructure. As global shipping becomes more complex, there are more opportunities for delays and disruptions to include additional challenges associated with geopolitical forces that lead to costly delays for businesses and customers alike.

Air Cargo Shipping – A Good Solution To The Global Supply Chain Woes

How are businesses shipping their goods today? It’s likely that most use some ocean freight service to move their cargo from point A to point B. Air cargo, on the other hand, is more effective in getting businesses what they need and their products out the door and into consumers’ hands in a timely manner. By utilizing air freight shipping, businesses can avoid the delays often associated with ground or ocean transportation.

Air freight shipping is becoming more popular among businesses seeking to move goods quickly and efficiently. In some instances where downtime represents lost revenues, air shipping is can be more cost-effective than other modes of transportation, making it an ideal choice for businesses on a strict budget.

Why Use Air Cargo Shipping?

Air cargo shipping is a critical piece of the logistics and supply chain puzzle. By using air cargo, businesses take advantage of the speed and direct nature of air cargo to get their products to customers, equipment back online, or manufacturing essentials to the factory floor quicker. This is especially important in today’s global economy, where time is of the essence. Plus, air cargo shipping is more reliable and efficient than ever before, thanks to advances in technology.

Planes are becoming increasingly fuel-efficient and airlines are making it easier for shippers to quote quickly, book cargo through their websites, and track their carbon footprint. More efficient logistics networks make it possible for companies of all sizes to compete internationally.
